New Zealand record important Indira Gandhi Gold Cup win
06 Oct 2005 13:44

New Zealand 4 defeated Malaysia 2
Goals: NZL – Honor Dillon FG 32m, Kayla Sharland FG 41m, Krystal Forgesson FG 46m PC 58m; MAS – Siti Noor Ruhani PC 7m, Kannagi Arumugam FG 27m

New Zealand suffered a scare before making a second half comeback to topple Malaysia 4-2 in the Indira Gandhi Gold Cup in New Delhi.

In the only match of the day, Malaysia jumped to a 2-0 lead late in the first half and looked set to inflict the Black Sticks’ second loss in succession.

However Honor Dillon, New Zealand’ top scorer in the tournament, grabbed a goal three minutes before the break to reduce the margin to one at half time.

New Zealand powered away in the second half, drawing level through Kayla Sharland in the 41st minute before Krystal Forgesson scored a brace midway through the half to ensure the win.

The result moves New Zealand into equal second on the points table alongside Australia. However Australia have a match in hand and will play competition leaders India tomorrow for the right to advance to Saturday’s final against the home team.

For New Zealand to make the final, they must rely on Australia losing to India and hope that their goal difference or goals scored is superior than their Oceania rivals.

Points Table
India 9 points
Australia 7
New Zealand 7
Malaysia 0
Italy 0
