US fans may not have seen much Olympic hockey on television, but reports from other parts of the globe give cause for optimism about hockeys popularity. A post-Olympic survey by Australian sports research consultants, Sweeney Sports, showed that 84% of those surveyed (number surveyed not given) had tuned into hockey. Only athletics, basketball, rowing and gymnastics rated higher.
In addition to the encouraging news from Australia, other informal reports indicated strong television coverage in the UK, the Netherlands and South Africa. The International Olympic Committee is currently compiling complete global viewing information for the Olympic Games. Available statistics will be reported in the next issue of Hockey News.
