Happy 75th Birthday FIH!

In the world of hockey, major milestones are usually measured in such currency as matches played, goals scored, medals earned and games umpired. In 1999, the International Hockey Federation celebrates a milestone of its own, with this one being measured in time, and numerous achievements.

January 24th marks the 75th Anniversary of the creation of the International Hockey Federation, and over the next year, the FIH will be commemorating the occasion with a programme of events based on the theme, "Celebrating our Past, Building our Future."

This significant anniversary presents an appropriate opportunity for the FIH to take stock of itself - where hockey has evolved from, its current position and where hockey should be going in the new millenium. In this vein, the FIH has undertaken a project called Vision 2000, the result of which will form a mission and strategy plan for hockey for the coming 4-6 year period.

Vision 2000 will incorporate input from hockey experts and administrators from around the world on the following subjects: the role of the athlete, umpire, coach, other tournament officials; the competition, the Rules, equipment, marketing, sponsorship, development, promotion, international relations, media and communicating the message.

As the cornerstone of the 75th Anniversary celebrations, Vision 2000 will be presented around the world to representatives of all five FIH Continental Federations in conjunction with major events, as well as during the FIH Committee, Executive and Council meetings in October 1999.

Also planned for the Anniversary programme is an exposition on hockey development to be co-ordinated by FIH President of Honour, Etienne Glichitch, and displayed at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The Organising Committee for the 75th Anniversary programme of events is being led by Executive Board member, Leandro Negre. Members are: Robert Lycke, Michael Krause, Joke Bougon and Hans Bertels.
