World Cup VIP's

The World Cup was honoured on a number of occasions with the presence of Dutch Crown Prince, Willem Alexander. In addition to his attendance at the opening ceremony, where he officially declared open the tournament, the Prince was among the spectators on the opening day and for both the men's and women's finals. The Prince, who was recently appointed an IOC member, also took part in the men's awards ceremony, handing over the World Cup to Dutch captain Stephan Veen, and joining FIH President Juan Angel Calzado for the medal distribution.

International Olympic Committee President, Juan Antonio Samaranch, visited the World Cup on 23rd May, where he witnessed what was perhaps the most exciting match in pool play. Following a lunch in his honour, Mr. Samaranch was in the stands to see Pakistan's men defeat England 7-5 in a see-saw, scoring festival of a match. He later took in some of the Netherlands v Korea women's match before returning to Spain.

Other IOC visitors to the World Cup included Dutch IOC members, Anton Geesink and Hein Verbruggen, IOC member Robin Mitchell of Fiji, who is also a member of the FIH Medical Committee, as well as IOC Sport Director, Gilbert Felli.

Dutch Minister of Sport, Mrs. Erica Terpstra, was a frequent visitor to the World Cup and an enthusiastic supporter of both the Dutch men's and ladies' teams.
