New Zealand to Contest Men’s World Cup Qualifier

5/31/01 -- Brussels, Belgium

The New Zealand Hockey Federation has today accepted an invitation from the International Hockey Federation (FIH) to participate in the 10th Men’s World Cup Qualifier, to be held in Edinburgh from 17th 29th July 2001.

This invitation has resulted from Zimbabwe pulling out of the World Cup Qualifier for financial reasons. New Zealand, who disagreed with the qualification criteria which resulted in their initial exclusion from the event, had previously filed a case to the Committee Arbitrage du Sports (CAS) in Lausanne, but later withdrew the complaint.

Els van Breda Vriesman, FIH president, commented, ‘’Whilst we are sorry to see a country unable to participate for financial reasons beyond their control, we are delighted that New Zealand has accepted our invitation to participate.’’
