CHAMPIONS CHALLENGE.

The FIH Council has decided to add South Africa as a 7th country and, possibly, Japan as an 8th country, subject to the agreement of the Indian Hockey Confederation to accept 1 or 2 more countries.
The rationale is that South Africa would have qualified for the event if they had participated in the Sydney Olympic Games for which they had qualified as the 7th Africa Cup winner, in accordance with the FIH qualification procedure for the XXVIIth Olympic Games (as approved by the IOC).
They did not take part following a decision by their National Olympic Committee that was totally beyond the control of the South African Hockey Association and the FIH.
The Winner will qualify for the 24th Men's Champions Trophy.

The deadline for confirmation of entry by the qualified countries is 15 January 2001. The FIH maintains the right to review the above pools if one or more countries do not enter.
