11 Oct 2002 09:39

ABC TV is proud to announce they have secured the right to be host broadcaster for the FIH (International Hockey Federation ) 10th Women's Hockey World Cup – 2002. Coverage of this prestigious international event begins on Sunday 24 November at 2.00pm (local time in each state) from Perth Hockey Stadium. The World Cup is second only to the Olympics Games on the world hockey calendar and is usually a 12 nation tournament. For the first time, Perth will host 16 nations - 6 more teams than in the Olympic Games. Australia’s Hockeyroos are reigning World Cup and Olympic Champions and are aiming to retain the mantle against strong opposition from the 15 other competing nations. The World Cup will showcase the best in world hockey and Australia’s impressive and proud hockey tradition. The World Cup is played as a two pool competition over 15 days and 72 matches. Each pool consists of 8 teams and is conducted as a ‘round robin’ with the highest placed teams in each pool playing in the semi-finals. All other teams will contest the classification matches to determine fifth to sixteenth place. ABC TV will have a top line up of commentators and specialists covering the event, led by one of ABC TV’s foremost commentators, Steve Robilliard. ABC TV Sport will be on site with an 8-camera coverage to capture all the best angles and top shots with their new state-of-the-art OB Van and digital technology.
