22 Apr 2003 09:02

Colorado Springs – An experienced squad of veteran athletes will lead the U.S. Field Hockey men in their preparations for the Pan American Games following the selection of the 2003 U.S. men’s national training squad.

Based in Moorpark, Calif. the training squad will provide head coach Shiv Jagday with the athlete pool for selections to 2003 tour and tournament teams including the U.S. team for the Pan American Games, Aug. 1-16, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The Pan American Games serve as the continental qualifying event for the 2004 Olympic Games with the winner of the tournament earning an automatic berth in Athens.

Chosen by a panel of U.S. Field Hockey selectors at the Open Trail, April 18-20 in Moorpark, the 24-player squad features 21 members from the 2002 U.S. roster including 2002 U.S. Field Hockey Athlete of the Year Shawn Hindy (Westlake Village Calif.) and 2001 Athlete of the Year Shawn Nakamura (Camarillo, Calif.). Hindy and Nakamura were members of the 1999 U.S. Pan American Games team along with 2003 squad members Jang Badhesha (San Jose, Calif.), Rinku Bhamber (Simi Valley Calif.), and Pat Cota (Camarillo Calif.). Also returning to the squad in 2003 are Pat Harris (Moopark Calif.), Sean Harris (Moorpark Calif.), Daraspreet Kainth (Fullerton Calif.), Koijan Kainth (Fullerton Calif.), Gurpal Kundi (Glendora Calif.), Malachi Mahan (Camarillo Calif.), Jarred Martin (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Bryan Rauschenberger (Simi Valley Calif.), Arjan Reyatt (Brea Calif.), Jeb Saez (Thousand Oaks Calif.), Daljeet Sagoo (Fullerton Calif.), Ramandeep Sandhu (Fremont Calif.), Ian Scally (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), David Schmoyer (Doyleston Pa.), Chris Terrebonne (Glendale, Calif.) and Jason Wellings (Walsall, UK).

New additions to the squad include former U.S. junior team members Alex van Akkooi (Stamford, Conn.) and Jaspal Grewall (Laguna Niguel Calif.) as well as former Massachusetts high school standout Nate Coolidge (Sandwich Mass.).

Additional members may be added to the U.S. squad as athletes recover from injuries.

In addition to the Pan American Games in August, the men’s national team schedule includes competition in the Pan American Cup Qualifier, May 5-11, in Santo Domingo. The U.S. will join Cuba, Mexico, Netherlands Antilles, Puerto Rico and host Santo Domingo in the tournament to determine qualification and seeding in the 2004 Pan American Cup. The Cup serves as the continental qualifier for the 2006 World Cup.
