Easter tournament to open World Cup stadium
14 Feb 2006 10:27

From 15-17 April, India, Argentina and Spain - three continental masters - will join home team Germany for a four-nation tournament at the opening of the World Cup stadium in Mönchengladbach.

The tournament at Warsteiner HockeyPark over the Easter weekend, with world champion Germany, Asian master India, South America’s champion Argentina and the European champion Spain, will be a worthy general rehearsal for the BDO Hockey World Cup, which will be held in the same stadium from 6-17 September this year.

The coach of the German national team, Bernhard Peters, will gather his World Cup selection in Mönchengladbach during a central training course in order to find the optimal formation for the four-nation tournament.

The 18-man team will be missing Tibor Weißenborn (Bloemendaal), Oliver Markowski (Club de Campo Madrid) and the other players who at the same time will participate in the 17th European Club Cup Winners Cup in Reading, England.

Spanish coach Mauritz Hendriks will therefore not be able to select players from Madrid. India and Argentina however will arrive with complete teams in Mönchengladbach.

All three guest teams have already qualified for the BDO Hockey World Cup as their respective continental champions.

The motto of the tournament is "everyone plays against everyone", which results in two daily matches. The tournament winner is the team ranked first at the end of the round robin matches.

Information on the exact playing schedule will be available shortly on the Deutscher Hockey-Bund’s website, www.deutscher-hockey-bund.de.
