The U.S. women's national field hockey team will not participate in the Pan American Cup qualifying tournament following the cancellation of the event by the Pan American Hockey Federation (PAHF).
Scheduled for April 4-13 in Havana, the tournament was to determine the North American, Central American and Caribbean qualifiers for the 2005 Pan American Cup in Bridgetown, Barbados. The Pan America Cup serves as the continental qualifier for the 2006 World Cup.
The cancellation occurred after the original nine-team field had dwindled to four nations: Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic and the United States. As a result, the PAHF has granted the U.S. automatic qualification in the 2005 Pan American Cup. Five teams were originally scheduled to advance from the qualifier to the Pan American Cup.
The men's Pan American Cup qualifying tournament remains scheduled for May 5-11 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Eight teams are currently scheduled for the men' with Barbados, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, The Netherlands Antilles, Puerto Rico and Trinidad & Tobago joining the USA at the event.
