Korea close to semifinals at Asian Games
08 Dec 2006 15:02

Korea booked a 3-0 victory over China in the men’s hockey tournament at the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar on Friday. The semifinalist of the BDO World Cup 2006 took its third straight victory and is one point away from a place in the semifinal stage at the most important Asian sporting event. In other Friday men’s action, India defeated Oman 9-0.

Korea is going strong at the Asian Games. The goal of the BDO World Cup semifinalist is not only to win the Asian Games, but also grab an Olympic ticket for the 2008 Beijing Games. The first two teams of the Asian Games will be qualified for the Olympic Games.

The match between Korea and China was a clash between two undefeated teams after three of the five preliminary rounds. China surprised earlier in the tournament by defeating India but couldn’t upset another hockey giant. After Woon Kon Yeo gave Korea the 1-0 lead after only nine minutes of play, the Korean team took complete control over the match. Goals from Jong Hyun Yang in the first half and Jong Ho Seo in the beginning of the second half, brought Korea the 3-0 victory.

With this third straight victory, Korea is almost sure of playing in the semifinal stage of the Asian Games. Although China lost, the Chinese team is still in a good shape of making it to the Final Four.

In later men’s action on Friday, India defeated Oman 9-0. India needs to take a victory over Korea on Sunday to have a slight chance of not dropping out of the semifinals.

In the women’s tournament, Japan defeated China 3-0 and is almost sure of a place in the final. India took a 7-0 victory against Hong Kong, while Malaysia was stronger than Taipei (2-0).

Action at the Asian Games continues on Saturday with two men’s and three women’s matches scheduled.
