Host of the Rabobank Hockey Champions Challenge, USA, won their first match of the tournament last night, defeating Spain 2-1 to set up a rematch in the fifth place playoff on Saturday.

Dina Rizzo scored the lead for the United States after half an hour capitalising on USA’s first penalty corner of the game.  Rizzo deflected the pass from Kelly Doton into the Spanish goal.

The second American goal was scored by Robyn Kenney in the 46th minute, following a nice attack over the right wing. It was the first international goal for Kenney.

Spain could only score near full time. Silvia Munzo tapped in the pass from Rocio Ybarra as the board showed last seconds running down.

On Friday the other four teams will compete in their final games of round robin play: Japan against New Zealand at 16:00 and tournament leader South Africa taking on England at 18:00. The tournament concludes with classification matches on Saturday.
