WorldHockey Umpiring Boost Update
25 Oct 2005 10:05
The WorldHockey Umpiring Boost was launched at the FIH Congress in Leipzig in November 2004.
So far, more than 70 national associations have signed up for the Boost. It is not too late to join in, and NAs who have not yet replied are invited to fill in the application form and participate in the project.
The WHUB Handbook contains:
FIH Recommendations and Guidelines for a National Umpiring Structure, including Umpires and Umpire Coaches Education and Accreditation Schemes. Templates and supporting resources, including suggested course programmes and contents, are also supplied
Information regarding the types of FIH supported Umpiring Courses that can be offered to National Associations either funded through FIH NHA Development Fund Grants, Olympic Solidarity Grants or through National Associations own resources
Ideas to help National Associations recruit, retain and develop umpires at all levels and of all ages; supported by templates and other resources to assist NAs to put these ideas into practice.
A limited number of Handbooks are still available if you did not receive them, or if your NA would like extra copies, please email [email protected].
The Handbook has been produced in English, and is posted on the WorldHockey website in the Umpiring section. A Spanish version is available there also.
Global Youth Hockey Marathon
In May 2005 the Global Youth Hockey Marathon took place. The theme this year was ‘The Big Try Out’ where young players were encouraged to try their hand at umpiring.
The first 50 National Associations to send in their GYHM reports, with accompanying photos, each received 10 Starter Umpire Kits. Each Kit comprised:
Set of umpiring cards
In addition, each of the GYHM participating National Associations received copies of the book ‘A Guide to Umpiring Hockey’, an umpiring resource written by Jane Nockolds, the former World Panel Umpire.
National/Regional Courses for Umpires and Umpires Coaches
In your applications for FIH NHA Development Fund Grants for 2004 and 2005, national associations have been encouraged to apply for Umpiring Courses.
As part of the WorldHockey Umpiring Boost programme, the budget will support an additional 12 courses per year, over and above those due to be run via FIH NHA Development Fund Grants awards.
So far, WHUB Umpiring Courses have been held in Jamaica, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Tanzania and Portugal. An Asian Hockey Federation Umpiring Seminar for Women was also held in Pakistan. Applications for a further four courses are in the pipeline.
This means that there are at least another two courses available for 2005, and there are still the full 12 Courses available for 2006.
We welcome applications for these additional WHUB Umpiring Courses. The application form can be found both in the Handbook and on the website. The WHUB Grant covers the course conductor’s airfare and a modest daily allowance while they are conducting the course.
Ten Umpiring Courses have been held so far in 2005 with FIH NHA Development Fund Grants, another four are already scheduled for later in the year with a further four courses to be scheduled.
National Umpiring Development Officers Workshops
During 2005 and 2006 a workshop for each continental federation is planned in order to introduce the FIH Guidelines and Recommendations for a National Umpiring Structure.
The target group for these workshops are the National Umpiring Development Officers or the people who, within their National Associations, are responsible for Umpiring Education and Development.
The plans for these workshops are currently being drawn up and are being scheduled into the DCC 2005 and 2006 Calendar, and workshop formats agreed in order to ensure a consistent delivery to the NAs.
