Cologne camp for Scotland women
26 Oct 2005 16:32

Scottish Hockey Union: Scotland Women will start their preparations for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne this weekend with a training camp in Cologne and two matches against Olympic champions, Germany.

Back on senior duty after their Junior World Cup campaign in Chile are Holly Cram (Glasgow Western), Ali Bell (Bonagrass Grove) and Aimee Clark (Hightown).

They will be joined by U21 team mates Cath Rae and Nikki Kidd, who were both named in national coach Lesley Hobley’s viewing group but have yet to make their debut at senior level.

With some squad regulars absent through injury or work commitments, Hobley has taken the opportunity to view fringe players.

Back into the squad come Lou Gordon (Glasgow Western) and Kat Cameron (Giffnock), plus Grove's Lou Munn who is a regular on the senior circuit but wasn’t part of the European championships squad. Those missing the trip include Cat Forrest who is suffering with cartilage problems to the back of her knee, Rhona Simpson and Emma Rochlin, who both have work commitments, and Abi Walker, who is concentrating on her final year studies at University.

This will be the team’s first trip without Kath Gray who retired after the European Championships to concentrate on her career. Gray was capped 72 times for her country during her playing career.

"This is a great opportunity for us to test ourselves against the best. It is another chance for us to use Germany as a yardstick to measure our progress, particularly our defensive structures,” Hobley said.

“A key element we will be testing will be our set piece defence as they have fantastic attacking players in Fanny Rinne and Natascha Keller.”

The Scots will play two uncapped matches against the German side who were runners up in the European Championships this summer.

The first match will be at 19:00 (local time) on Tuesday, 1 November.
