Argentina wins four nation event
30 Jan 2006 07:23

By Graciela H. Ortiz
An early goal to 2005 WorldHockey Player of the Year Luciana Aymar gave Argentina a 1-0 win over the Netherlands in a four nation tournament in Cordoba on Saturday night.

Argentina were aggressive from the beginning, getting an early penalty corner in the third minute to score through Luciana Aymar from a dragged shot.

The Netherlands could not break Argentina's hegemony in midfield led by a brilliant Aymar, who posed constant problems for the Dutch back row.

Meanwhile, the South American side continued attacking, creating at two scoring chances.

The Netherlands pressed hard in the first minutes of the second half, moving up their lines to push Argentina towards their back line. But their attack-minded plan was only an illusion as the scheme returned to the first-half play. The visitors tried to break through on the right wing but failed in their attempt.

At the other end of the field, Argentina kept the pace and advanced, producing a good option by Aymar from a penalty corner that Dutch goalkeeper Eveline Haan saved in the 55th minute.

From then on, Argentina maintained the rhythm and stayed in command until the end of the match to take a deserved victory.

In the battle for third position, Australia defeated England 4-3 on penalties after neither side could score in regulation and two periods of extra time.

Best Player of the Tournament: Minke Booij (Netherlands)
Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament: Beth Storry (England)
Fair Play: England
