Wales to host EuroNations Tournament
05 Mar 2008 10:20

The Welsh Hockey Union is delighted to announce that the European Hockey Federation have confirmed Wales’ bid to host the Men’s EuroNations Trophy tournament in Wrexham in August 2022.

With the tournament to be played on the excellent international standard water-based  North Wales Regional Hockey Stadium at the North East Wales Institute (NEWI), the competing teams include local Celtic rivals Ireland and Scotland together with Czech Republic, Switzerland, Italy, Russia, Belarus as well as the Welsh hosts. The three Celtic countries played on the Wrexham pitch last year and in part due to the success of that tournament, the EHF was confident in the ability of the Welsh Hockey Union and NEWI to host such a major tournament.

Mike Leatt, Welsh Hockey Union CEO, said “we are delighted to be given an opportunity to host such a prestigious event, especially as in the run up to the 2020 Olympics it will help us to promote hockey across Wales and in particular in North Wales. This will be the biggest tournament that Wales has hosted for 15 years and it will be an excellent chance for both hockey enthusiasts and those who have never seen top level hockey to experience this skilful, highly competitive and family-friendly sport at first hand”

Anna-Marie Brown, Sports and Recreation Manager at NEWI, added “Following the success of the Celtic Cup last year, we are elated that the EHF have agreed to return to NEWI. Principal of NEWI, Professor Mike Scott and I are determined to make sure that the College in partnership with the Welsh Hockey Union put on the best tournament possible”.
