Ben Hawes to captain GB Olympic Team
14 Jul 2008 10:34

Great Britain Men’s Head Coach Jason Lee has named 27-year-old defender Ben Hawes as the man to captain the GB side throughout the Olympic Games.  Glenn Kirkham and Barry Middleton have been named as co-vice-captains.

Hawes, dropped from the England side who failed to secure Olympic qualification at the first opportunity in last summer’s EuroHockey Nations Championships, was also the man who captained the Great Britain side to a 2-0 victory against India at the Qualification tournament in Chile earlier this year.

This will be the Surbiton man’s second Olympics having competed in the 2004 Games when Great Britain finished in 9th spot.

Great Britain men will be in action next week in their final matches before leaving for the training camp in Macau at the end of July.  They take on Belgium in Boom in two matches on 17 and 18 July. The squad to participate in these matches will be the 16 members of the Olympic squad plus goalkeeper James Fair.
