Australia outplays Korea
19 Jul 2008 15:24

The Australian men’s team continues to take winning form into the upcoming 2008 Beijing Olympics, outplaying Korea in game one of a three test series played in Cairns.

The Kookaburras controlled the match from the opening whistle, with the majority of the first half played within the Kookaburras scoring end.

Despite their early dominance the Kookaburras were unable to make their way onto the scoreboard in the opening minutes.

Their first chance came after Rob Hammond received a free hit outside the attacking circle. However after combining with Matthew Wells, Hammond's shot traveled right of the net.

After both teams traded missed penalty corner opportunities the Kookaburras once again lifted their tempo, with Eli Matheson showing determination to take on the Korean defence, delivering a short pass to Jamie Dwyer, with Grant Schubert then putting home the first goal of the match.

With momentum on their side the Kookaburras applied even more scoreboard pressure only minutes later, with Des Abbott continuing his good recent form to score in the 25th minute.

With Jamie Dwyer active around goal and Rob Hammond controlling the play in the midfield the Kookaburras remained well on top throughout the remainder of the half.

However a momentary lapse in concentration with only seconds remaining in the half allowed Korea to get themselves back into the game with a late goal.

The opening stages of the second half were fairly even, with Korea restricting the Kookaburras play throughout the midfield.

However after two penalty corner attempts the Kookaburras eventually broke the deadlock, with Kiel Brown sending a powerful hit to the back of the net in the 52nd minute.

When Schubert scored his second goal of the match only minutes later the result was put beyond doubt.

Jamie Dwyer said he was pleased with the team's ability to apply constant pressure throughout the match.

'We really set the tempo in the opening 15 minutes however we didn't take our chances and make the most of our opportunities. However we continued to apply pressure and in the end it paid off as our relentlessness in the forward half was impressive.' Said Dwyer.

The Kookaburras will take on Korea again on Monday 21 July before completing the series on Wednesday 23 July.
