Sotherton back on track
03 Feb 2006 08:21

Kelly Sotherton is convinced she is back on track as she completes her preparations for gold at next month's Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

The Olympic heptathlon bronze medallist is determined to prove her poor results last year were just a temporary blip.

Sotherton said: "I am much happier than last year. I over-trained going into the World Championships in Helsinki and the result was that I didn't perform when I needed to."

She added: "This time last year I was put in a difficult position having to find five coaches and having to dictate my training and not having any idea of what to do after my main coach had gone back to Holland.

"Realistically, I did quite well coaching myself but no one knew my goal.

"This year is a different structure and everyone knows where I am aiming.

"They all know me better and everyone talks to each other so every coach has an input somewhere else.

"I am in the middle but I dictate what I do and they help me along the road.

"You can always doubt your own ability and once you do this you start putting in extra work when I should have backed off a little.

"Technically and speed-wise I wasn't sharp and that was due to not doing the right work at the right time. You learn from that experience and I have now learnt a lot from what happened at that time."
