23 May 2006 15:29

The UK Counties Athletic Union has approved proposals by the Fell Runners Association to hold Inter-County Fell Races for Senior Men and Senior Women. The events will be held in conjunction with the Settle Hills Race on Saturday 1 July. Please note that these events are also open races. Full information will be sent on receipt of entries and sae.

In each race, over a distance of 7 miles with 1750ft of ascent, the team championships will be based on four runners starting with three to count. The Inter County Athletic Union will present medals to the first three teams and the first three individuals. It is expected that counties will supply team members with county vests.

FRA Chairman Alan Barlow, who is handling entries, can be contacted at 12 Redcar Close, Hazel Grove, Stockport, Cheshire, SK7 4SQ; Telephone 0161 483 9330; e-mail: [email protected]. The closing date is 17 June. The entry fee is £3.50 per runner payable to Fell Runners Association.

He says the race HQ in North Ribblesdale Rugby Club has facilities such as showers and bar. Details regarding overnight accommodation can be obtained from 01729 825192 or at  www.yorkshiredales.org/dales/sdSettle.htm

The FRA caution: “This course is a testing fell race and runners must have experience of fell /  hill running. Fell Runners Association safety requirements will apply and competitors must be suitably equipped and capable of navigation in adverse weather conditions. In particular runners should have with them windproof whole body cover, map and compass suitable for navigating the course, and whistle in case any or all of them are required.”
