National Youth Hockey Festival

Sunday 18th May 2003

England Hockey will celebrate its first National Youth Hockey Festival on Sunday 18th May 2003 at Cannock Hockey Club. The main event will be the National Mini Hockey Finals where the nations top Under 11 and Under 13 boys and girls teams will complete.

For a number of years the England Hockey Young Umpire Challenge has been held along side the Mini Finals. Under the guidance of England Hockey’s team of umpire coaches, budding young umpires from all regions of England will be appointed to participate in the Challenge and officiate all finals matches. This year will also see a number of returning young umpire join the coaching team to share their EHL and International experiences.

The Festival will also mark the introduction of the first ever Young Leaders Challenge. This is an exciting new initiative based on the success of the Youth Sports Trust Leadership Camps and England Hockey’s Young Umpire Challenge. Participants aged 14 to 18 years old will have the opportunity to participate in the 2 day Challenge, which will focus on the new Leadership Award as well as the provision of practical experience alongside teams and officials in the Mini Finals.

One Young Umpire and one Young Leader will be selected by their peers to represent England at the World Youth Hockey Festival in August. The lucky pair will be appointed to join other young people from across the world to participate in an international development project at the Men’s Champions Trophy Tournament in Amsterdam.

Mindy Dhanda, England Hockey’s 20 year old representative on the World Youth Panel, will be leading the Festival Team with the support of England Hockey National Development Managers’ Mike Joyce and Jane Nockolds. Mindy is a veteran of the Young Umpire Challenge and has EHL and International experience as a young umpire. He is also a current member of the National Umpiring Group.

England Hockey’s Interim Chief Executive Andrew Hope commented, ’The National Youth Festival is a clear demonstration England Hockey’s commitment to the development of young people in all areas of the game. I wish all the participants, young and old, a fun and memorable experience.’
