Qormi Hockey Club to organize World Hockey Marathon
The Qormi Hockey Club, Malta will be celebrating the FIH Global Youth Hockey Marathon 2004 between Friday, 14th May and Sunday, 16th May. The International Hockey Federation has chosen 'junior club development' as this year’s theme for the Marathon. This will coincide with the Qormi Hockey Club program for junior club development. FIH Development Manager Gabrielle van Doorn said said that if we want to offer our youth a high quality and a lifetime opportunity in hockey we need to provide structures for sustainable hockey development. A club can be one such structure.

Coaching Clinic
Qormi Hockey club will kick start their activities on Friday afternoon with a Coaching Clinic for PE Teachers. The club understands that various schools have the required equipment but unfortunately many teachers lack the knowledge of the sport. This clinic is aimed for the teachers who want to make their hockey sessions fun and safe at the same time. PE Teachers attending to this clinic will receive a skill drills CD for hockey, a basic skills booklet (specially designed for schools) and a hockey promotion pack produced by Qormi Hockey Club.

Mini Hockey
Saturday morning will see the PE Teachers in action with children from the Qormi area. The club will be organizing a treasure hunt, a training session for beginners and a mini hockey tournament. In the after noon the children will be treated with a Hockey National League match between Qormi Hockey Club and The George Pub.

Parents vs Children
At 7:00pm the children will be back in action, this time against there own parents. Qormi Hockey Club wants to involve parents more in the game and the Parents vs. Children match is the perfect starting opportunity for parents who want to be involved with the club. After the game we will organize a BBQ for all Junior Club Members and their families. Apart from the sausages and burgers, Qormi Hockey Club will also show live the Eurovision song contest!!

Umpiring Clinic
On Sunday, International Umpire Raymond Micallef will conduct a basic umpiring session with youth players at the Qormi Hockey pitch. The session will involve the fundamentals of umpiring and the basic rules of hockey The club will give whistles and an Umpiring Certificate to all those who attend.

Qormi Hockey Club president Joe Grech said that the Club has been re-structuring its junior setup for the last 6 months and that recently the club has seen a huge boost in junior membership. In November 2003 the club appointed a Development Officer and with the recent school visits from club coaches, the junior membership has risen to 40 members. The club has also embarked on a Development Plan which include projects such as the 'hockey ghall-familja' and the 'hockey4qormi' projects.
