East Africa – Uganda country report

From 5th-9th October, Uganda organised the first ever East African Club Championships, which took place in Kampala Uganda's capital city.

The event attracted 6 men's & 4 ladies teams from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar

The tournament was run for one whole week & ended as Uganda celebrated her 42 Independence Anniversary. All teams were competitive, with most clubs fielding youths aged between 16 & 25 years who are also the pillar of the game in East Africa.

Kenya's experienced Armed forces who happen to be among Africa’s Champions lifted the men's title. In the ladies final, Slidders emerged winners after defeating Blue Eaglets 2-1 in a tightly contested match. The 2 had earlier met in preliminaries which Eaglets won 2-1.

This event is aimed at fostering unity among the East African countries & will continue to be played each year in different nations. We also plan to use this as a means of developing countries that are behind in the game like Tanzania and Zanzibar. Other countries like Rwanda will join as soon as they begin playing the hockey. I am hoping to help run programmes in Tanzania & Zanzibar next year as soon as I have finished my exams. The hockey in these countries is at a very low level & I am volunteering to help them out through coaching programmes.

They also told me about the level of poverty there, which makes it very hard to acquire equipment. As other countries (Wales & New Zealand) have done for Uganda; I wish to call upon all those youths, clubs, associations & well-wishers who love Hockey to give a hand & collect hockey equipment (i.e. Sticks, balls, goalie kit) to donate to Tanzania and Zanzibar. This will enable us help develop & promote the game to many countries.

If you are willing to help please contact PATRICK YOACEL on 256 77 380861 or   e-mail [email protected]

Youths are highly encouraged to join in this cause because together we can change the face of Hockey & make it A number one sport in this world.

Still to come this year is the East African University Games, where Hockey is among the games to be played. We expect to see more than 8 men's & ladies teams battle it out to see who is who in East Africa.
