President’s View - WorldHockey Online Magazine, Issue 18

A happy New Year to WorldHockey Online readers.

With over 220,000 lives claimed by one of the biggest natural disasters in history, it is difficult to turn our thoughts to hockey.  The world has been horrified by this enormous disaster and the hockey family in Asia and Africa will undoubtedly share in its bereavement.  Our thoughts are with them as they mourn their losses and we pray that their governments are able to rebuild and regenerate the affected areas as quickly as possible.

The New Year brings a lot of exciting hockey, with six major WorldHockey events – men’s and women’s Champions Trophies, Champions Challenges and Junior World Cups.   At the time of writing, the inaugural Indian Premier Hockey League is well underway and culminates with a final on the 13 February.  The PHL can be an important factor to restore the cutting edge to India’s international hockey and also regenerate weekly interest in hockey from the Indian public.  A key factor will be the league’s success in instilling tribal dedication from the populations of each of the participating cities in their teams.  With some of the world’s top players, both foreign and from India, many new innovations and wall-to-wall television coverage from ESPN, there is much to conjure passion.

2005 also brings the long-awaited move of the FIH office to Lausanne.  The new home for the hockey family opened exactly on schedule on Tuesday 4th January and is a brand-new, purpose-built headquarters in the heart of the Olympic Capital. The state-of-the-art premises will provide an optimum environment and location from which to promote, develop and administer hockey’s interests worldwide.  An official opening will follow on Friday 4 March 2005, by IOC Life President, Juan Antonio Samaranch.
