16 Jun 2006 07:40

The USA women's team has been named the United States Olympic Committee's Team of the Month for May 2006 after securing a World Cup berth at the Samsung World Cup Qualifier.

Entering the qualifying tournament as the No. 6 seed, coach Lee Bodimeade's team clinched one of the five available World Cup berths awarded at the tournament

The USA defeated the world's No. 6-ranked team New Zealand and host Italy in securing its seventh straight appearance at the sport's world championship tournament.

The USA lost to eventual tournament champion England, 1-0 in extra time in the tournament semi finals before falling to Japan in the 3rd place game.

The USA returns to international play in August when the team hosts world No. 1 Netherlands, No. 2 Argentina and No. 3 Australia in the AstroTurf March on Madrid Four Nation Tournament.
