Germany rout Scotland at Setanta Sports Trophy
15 Jun 2007 09:56

Germany’s women’s team showed why they are defending Olympic champions in Day Two of the Setanta Sports Trophy, with an 8-0 defeat of Scotland, whilst Wales scored an excellent 1-0 win over Egypt in the men’s event.

In the Women’s Setanta Sports Trophy, sponsored by ESB, favourites Germany sent an ominous message to Ireland and South Africa with a champagne display against Scotland. An Eileen Hoffman hat trick was supported by goals Maike Stoeckel (2), Fanny Rinne, captain Marion Rodewald and former Worldhockey Player of the Year Natasha Keller.

Meanwhile, in the man’s competition, Wales produced an upset by beating Egypt 1-0 in a tight evening game. Dominic Graham claimed the winner against the in-form Egyptians who are ranked ten places ahead of Wales at 15th.

Friday’s games see all teams in action and the crucial second games are played. In the women’s Trophy, Germany can clinch a place in the final with victory over South Africa whilst Ireland will see their match against Scotland as a ‘must win’ after Germany’s devastating display yesterday. In the men’s event, both Wales and Ireland can qualify for the final if they win their games against Egypt and Canada respectively.
