GEW Men's Champions Trophy Final

Netherlands v Germany

Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG), left, and Terry Walsh (AUS), both FIH Master Coaches look at the coaching strategies of the GEW Men's Champions Trophy Final.

Post Match Commentary

Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

For me this was a very tough game because the Germans had slightly more percentage possession in the first half. When the two teams tried to put pressure on the other, neither team succeeded because there was not too much adjustment to recover the ball by the midfielders. As a consequence most of the game both teams played half-court pressure. Which in fact means no pressure! The game was very predictable, and neither team took many risks for goalscoring opportunities

Netherlands win the 24th Champions Trophy, 3-2 on Penalty Strokes

End of Extra Time:

Incident

Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

A long pass from Germany sees a deflection go into goal - but the umpire Ray O`Connor rules a long corner

89:56 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

A clever reverse stick pass from Biederlack along the left flank gives the Germans a goal chance but from the baseline...

89:42 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Delmee pushing very high for Holland - following build-up with Taekema in the midfield

88:09 Incident

*** second half extra time started ***

87:21 Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

I think that neither team is taking many risks to attack and also for recovering the ball when they are not in possession. As a consequence the game is predictable

86:14 Incident

Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

*****First half of extra time finished****

85:52 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

interception by Lomand (NED) creates a counter for de Nooijer whch is covered cleverly by Kunz

84:59 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Christian Wein and Max Landshut both have goal shots foiled for Germany

84:01 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Delmee to De Nooijer with a reverse-stick shot - bringing a long-corner without result

82:55 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Germany continue with their sweeper well back behind their defensive trio while the dutch are trying to Jazet to create an extra midfield player

81:42 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Sacha Reinelt closed down inside attacking circle after a promising counter

80:53 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Very good chance from de Nooijer`s centre following a good pass from Rob Derikx

80:04 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Already Jazet carries the ball twice into attack - over 30 metres

79:18 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Both sides are now playing very high pressure.

78:22 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

An error-free back field with the ability to create and finish an opportunity is the recipe of success for both sides - this game really is very difficult to predict

76:50 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

The game is in the balance with the Dutch dominating the 2nd period, in much the same way as the Germans did in the 1st.

75:59 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Extra time is 2 x 7 1/2 minutes each end, Golden Goal. If there is no result in extra time, we move to a penalty stroke competition.

74:22 Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

When both teams try to play full-pressure - they have never succeeded. Of course this is because neither teams are too fit to recover the ball, or because both are playing well the 16 yd hit

73:00 Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

Play will now go on to extra time.

72:26 Incident

Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Geert Derikx has been changed - with Menno Booij -

69:00Incident

68:46 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Fast break from the back 25 by De Nooijer sees Crone again winning the contest near his defensive circle

67:49 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Good counter by Weissenborn - brings the 1st German attack for some time

66:44 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

The Dutch bringing more pressure in the last 2 minutes

65:46 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Fine covering save by Kunz following a good build-up and shot at goal by Matthijs Brouwer

64:51 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Neither side are able to ring continuous pressure in their attacking zone. As Kunz returns to the pitch...

63:50 Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

The speed of the game has decreased with only eight minutes to go - both sides are desperately trying to keep possession

62:31 Incident

Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

A controversial decision brings a free hit to the Dutch in their defence

61:58 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Germany making numerous substitutions switching up to 4 players at a time

60:46 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

It`s a very even contest here, with the Dutch continuing to maintain their tempo, compared to their first half

59:58 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Long breaks from mid-fielder`s interceptioons would seem to be the key to the final result

58:55 Incident

Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

German captain Kunz injured. The play is in the balance. Kunz has been replaced for the blood rule

58:10 Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

This was a good example of why I think the rules should be changed to have 3 players outside the 25

56:53 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

20 players in the circle - but no result!

56:19 Incident

Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Free Hit to Holland

55:47 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Clear chance for the Dutch - following some clever play from Froger but Delmee`s shot from 5 metres misses wide from the left

55:46 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Clear chance for the Dutch - following some clever play from Froger but Delmee`s shot from 5 mtres misses wide from the left

54:58 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Both sides are already showing signs of fatigue

54:29 Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

The free hit was taken by Crone, and the Germans had a great movement, but Reinelt missed the deflection

53:13 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

All 11 Dutch players are inside the circle!

52:48 Incident

Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Free Hit outside the circle to Germany

52:25 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Delmee (NED) has made 2 uncharacteristic, unforced errors

A quality clearance from Clemens again foils a promising Dutch attack

49:48 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

A quality clearance from Clemens again foils a promising Dutch attack

A half position attack from the right side of the pitch - a pass to de Nooijer , who hit the ball to goal, but it was out of range...

47:47 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

An intense struggle between Crone and De Nooijer is continuing to dominate the play

45:46 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

The Dutch have definitely lifted their tempo - and the game is now moving to both ends

44:16 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Quick goal shot from Michel (GER) - misses wide to the right.

43:21 Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

The Dutch are still defending 2-2, the Germans flicked directly at the goal - to be saved by a player, not the goalie

42:29 Incident

Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

PC - Reinalt wins a corner with individual skill

41:50 Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

De Nooijer again is playing centre forward - the Dutch are playing half-court pressure

41:09 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Outstanding chance to Geeris from Holland following a De Nooijer fast break along the right baseline. Much more mid-field movement seems to have achieved more fluency for the Dutch

38:23 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

The first 2 minutes have seen 3 Dutch attacks in the left side the last bringing a PC following an outstanding save from Clemens Arnold. PC was mis-trapped, but a resulting free hit on the edge of the circle brings all 11 German defenders inside the defensive circle. no result.

38:19 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

The first 2 minutes have seen 3 Dutch attacks in the left side the last bringing a PC following an outstanding save from Clemens Arnold. PC was mis-trapped, but a resulting free hit on the edge of the circle brings all 11 German defenders inside the defensive circle. no result.

36:49 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Jazet is pushing very high in front of the back 3 to bring pressure to the German mid-field.

36:16 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

No significant positional changes from either side to begin the 2nd half

36:09 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

No significant positional changes from either side to begin the 2nd half

35:52 Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

De Nooijer has changed his position on the field - he was playing centre forward but in the top position in the field and now he is playing as a mid-fielder in the last 15 mins

Second Half

Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

*** Half-time commentary ***Following a very even first ten minute period, the Germans have controlled the match. The Germans will be accutely aware that they have squandered several opportunities. The challenge for the Dutch will be to arrest mid-field ascendancy from the Germans. They will undoubtedly in my view, endeavour to apply much more pressure to the German backfield. This will mean a change of strategy.

Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

*** Half-time commentary*** One of the reasons the Germans have dominated the game is that the Dutch are trying to play semi-active pressure positioning one player top - but it didn`t work so well - as the Germans are controlling the reception of the ball in the middle of the field. After receiving the ball the Germans had the ability to create the goal-scoring opportunities. I think the decision of the Dutch will be to keep the player at the top or just drop this player in the middle of the field in order to play half-court pressure

34:32 Incident

Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Free hit from the right side of the circle to GER has a clear deflection wide of the goal to the left

33:57 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

The trend of the game has the Germans stretching the Dutch defence regularly and causing Jazet considerable anxiety in the Dutch defence

32:31 Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

From a defensive point of view the Dutch still defend the game 2-2 - and leave the option of the flick to the goalie

31:52 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

the outcome was cleanly saved by Vogels from another variation to the left

31:11 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Germany earned a PC from a central build-up against a more frequently occurring stretched Dutch defence

30:07 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

The Dutch Taekema dispossesses behind the centre line and breaks the attackin 25 and from a central position brings a timely save from Clemens

27:34 Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

The Dutch defended the corner 2-2 - GER flicked the ball and the Dutch defenders stopped it

26:41 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

An entertaining end-to-end account has seen Jazet dispossessed in the miod-field and the resulting counter attack brings the PC to Michel from GER

25:39 Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

The Germans defended the PC 1 - 2- 1 and the Dutch flicked the ball out of range

24:27 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

The pressure of 3 left side attacks from the Dutch has finally lead to a PC

22:58 Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

The other reasdon is that Germany is receiving the ball in the middle with accuracy

22:30 Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

Germany is dominating the game at the moment, the reason is because the Dutch are waiting for half court pressure -

21:32 Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

A wonderful left side centre to Germany sees a tip in attempt from Biederlack reactively saved by Vogels - the clearest chance from field play to date

20:23 Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

PC with Michel rolling the ball to the left with clever disguise to see Emmerling`s flick comfortably saved by Dutch goalie Vogels

19:16 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

PC to Germany Biederlack fouled after an intense dribble - eliminating 2 defenders

18:44 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

The Germans are passing the ball from the midfield over 30 metres to the attacking 25 whereas the Dutch are relying on breakaways carrying the ball through De Nooijer

17:14 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Clever skills by Emmerling from GER as he bobbles the ball into the attacking circle on the left side but the Dutch cover and clear effectively through Jazet

14:45 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Froger receives a green card, as the Dutch continue to play on the counter with De Nooijer being their major focus to instigate from the mid-field

12:57 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

The conditions here in Colgne are sunny - which hasn’t deterred both teams from playing with high speed

11:51 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

After 10 mins players still turning the ball over frequently - from both sides

10:09 Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

The game is reasonably open because both teams are using pressure when the ball is on the right or the left side, rather than in the middle

09:04 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

2 searching centres from GER from both flanks causing considerable anxiety in the Duth defence

08:57 Beckman from Germany has not taken any part in this game, interestingly, and our belief is he is not injured

08:25 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

a good interception from Crone against de Nooijer led to i right side attack fror Germany. Good scoring opportunity from Domke.

08:25 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

The germans have changed their goalkeeper....

08:19 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

The germans have changed their goalkeeper....

07:22 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

A game based mainly around counter attacks with the front players only from both teams trying to apply pressure. Fatigue has hit both teams with opportunities not receiving the quality of execution their teams demanded

06:53 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

Both sides are playing considerable pressure inside their attacking 25s

06:25 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

excellent build-up from GER resulting in goal shot from Domke which deflected wide

05:48 Rodolfo Mendoza (ARG)- FIH Master Coach

The first five mins of the game both teams are playing semi-active pressure - this is the first time both teams have shown this

04:26 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

A very good interception by Kunz against Brouwer in a deep left attack

03:31 Terry Walsh (AUS)- FIH Master Coach

The major change between the starting line-ups from yesterday is that Clemens Arnold will be in goal today for Germany
