Q. What steps are involved in installing a hockey pitch or facilities?
A: A comprehensive FIH Guide to Installing Hockey Pitches and Facilities is available in the Pitches and Equipment section of this website. It is a good place to find out about many aspects of installing a pitch and facilities ranging from project management and funding, through turf selection to facilities for holding events.
Q. Do the recommendations of FIH hold authority for pitch construction, pitch lighting and pitch maintenance?
A: FIH has no authority to demand compliance with the recommendations set out in many of the referenced standards and publications of FIH except for FIH sanctioned events when compliance of the pitch with required standards is a condition of the contract between FIH and the Organising Committee.
However, the information contained in the various standards and FIH publications has been tested over many years and contributes significantly to consistency of play, player safety, comfortable spectator viewing levels and general enjoyment of the game.
In the event of a liability action for any unfortunate incident, it is possible that the recommended specifications of the FIH would be (inter alia) the standard on which any legal decision would initially be assessed, particularly in relation to safety.
Consequently, FIH strongly recommends that all member nations and their constituent member organisations should follow the recommendations outlined in the various FIH publications and advice which will be updated from time to time.
Relevant documents are published in the Pitches and Equipment section of this website.
