Advice for Team Medical Personnel

Team medical personnel should be aware of the responsibilities placed on them in FIH Tournament Regulations and the FIH Anti-Doping Policy.

In this context, the notes below outline the major issues concerning team medical personnel.  They also provide useful guidelines for other, non-FIH, events.

Note that:

  • the team doctor/physical therapist/trainer should be informed as to the medication, substances and/or supplements taken by the athlete;
  • be aware that some supplements have precursors of prohibited substances and their ingredients are not listed on their labels;
  • the medical history of the athlete should be known and peculiarities if any;
  • knowledge of the environment that the tournament will be taking place should be known; up to date information can be obtained on the country on their web site, consulate or embassy
  • the latest information on travel medicine should be sought re vaccinations inoculations water atmospheric conditions;
  • if an athlete takes asthmatic medication this will have to be substantiated.
