Young defender Mark Knowles has enjoyed great success with the Australian team since debuting at the 2004 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia. His first international appearance had been put on ice following a broken ankle in 2003, but within two years of his debut, he had won an Olympic gold medal at the 2004 Athens Games and was part of the victorious Australian team at the 2005 Champions Trophy in Chennai, India.
He was voted the FIH 'Young Player of the Year' in 2007 and is a keen golfer and a fan of motor racing and going to the beach.
Born in Rockhampton, the same Queensland town as Jamie Dwyer, the pair established a hockey coaching business together in 2007. His cousin, Regan Harrison, is an Olympic swimmer who won a gold medal at the 2001 World Championships and silver at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
