India and Korea strong at Women’s Asia Cup
03 Sep 2007 15:05

Both India and Korea booked a huge victory on the third day of the Women’s Asia Cup here at Kings Park in Hong Kong. India defeated Thailand 16-0 and tops Pool A now together with China. Korea nailed host Hong Kong 18-0 and leads Pool B.

The huge difference between the top four teams and the lower ranked sides was starkly highlighted on the third day here at Kings Park, Hong Kong.

India's 16-0 victory was another tournament goal scoring record, bettering China's 15-0 scored yesterday against Singapore.

India showed impressive stick work against the outclassed the Thai squad who to their credit never stopped trying with several runs at the Indian goal in the closing minutes of the game with Ompimol Kititeerasopon and Pannipha Phanin prominent.

Rather than using raw power play in all their shots at goal, the Indian players showed deft touches both in open play and in taking penalty corners.

Several Indian goals also came from very well taken reverse stick flicks and hits.

Both Surinder Kaur's and Rani Ritu's reverse stick prowess was displayed with beautifully taken goals in the 52nd and 55th minutes of the match to take the score to 11-0.

Similarly India's four converted penalty corners did not come from powerful hits but rather very clever passing inside the Thai circle.

India cruised to a 5-0 lead at the interval and then moved up a notch in the second half to really show their class and score another 11goals.

Korea's remarkable effort against Hong Kong (18-0) was a mixture of sheer pace and power as the squad literally ran the young and inexperienced Hong Kong squad ragged from the opening whistle.

With high scoring the order of the day in fixtures between the top four sides in the tournament, China, Japan, Korea and India, and the inexperienced lower ranked sides, points difference will come into contention when the cross over classification matches get underway on Saturday.

Certainly Korea would be looking to face India then rather than China.

Korea started tonight's match at a furious pace with the opening goal coming in the 3rd minute through a field goal by captain Kim Jin Kyoung.

And that was the order of the day as Korea never let up during the entire 70 minutes of non-stop action that kept Hong Kong goalkeepers Queenie Ho and Dora Lau extremely busy.

With the half time score 9-0 in Korea's favor, the crack East Asian side continued their ferocious assault on the Hong Kong goal with the only issue being whether or not they would better India's 16-0 win over Thailand.

That record was broken in the 68th minute when Oh Seon Soon converted a penalty corner that was followed a minute later through a field goal by Park Mi Hyun to give Korea their 18-0 win.
