Wash out delays Kookaburras result
23 Jan 2008 07:13

The Kookaburras will have to wait three days before officially claiming what looks to be their first victory of the 5 Nation Tournament in South Africa.

In a strange set of circumstances their match against the Netherlands was washed out with 26 minutes of play remaining overnight, leaving the result in limbo.

The young Kookaburras line up began their second match of the tournament in fine form, taking a two goal lead into the half time break before adding another goal just after half time.

It appeared nothing would prevent the Kookaburras from claiming the match, until a serious down pour struck the pitch eight minutes into the second half.

Within minutes the pitch was underwater due to limited drainage.

After a two and a half hour delay play was attempted to resume on a second pitch however that pitch was also unplayable due to the rain.

After deliberation the tournament director ruled the remaining 26 minutes will be played on Friday 25 January which was previously scheduled as a rest day.

Prior to the delay the Kookaburras appeared firmly in control, with 2007 World Hockey Young Player of the Year Mark Knowles and Luke Doerner ensuring the Netherlands forwards were under constant pressure, allowing limited space in their circle.

The Kookaburras were equally impressive up forward, with 20 year old Eddie Ockenden once again putting his hand up for Olympic selection after opening the scoring and then setting up Andrew Smith for his goal in the second half.
